Folkstory
A homebrew TTRPG by Ciaran O’Connor
One rule for you, Dear Reader
If you’ve arrived here I’ve likely harrassed you into playtesting this game, or at least eyeballing the rules. So, to start with, a request to you, the reader.
I’ve spent well over 300 hours working on this, over the course of 5 years. If you’re gonna read it or use it, then feedback on it. Even if you don’t like it. If you say ‘Ciaran, I’ll read it’ and then don’t mention it again I’ll be indefinitely waiting and take my brokenheartedness to the grave. Even if you utterly hate it and find it a boring, complex uninspiring mess, say that to me. I can work with that, and I’ll feel like you’ve given it some time and thought.
Also, remember that any feedback or joy you do get out of this is like goldust to me.
What this is…
…is a table top roleplaying game. It’s an alternative to dungeons and dragons but in gdocs form and raw as fuck. It will be riddled with unormalized language, inconsistencies, errors, gameable loopholes and narrative black holes. But my hope is that there is enough here to get a game together. The only way in which I think it deliberately varies from the format of D&D is that it includes the sketch of a world and history against which to set the adventures.
I would invite newcomers to attempt to make a character first. You might want more understanding of the rules, in which case check out the Combat & Basics, Skills, and the Whispering rules, should you want to be a magic user. If you want more on the world and lore, check out the World doc. If you feel like selecting some gear for your character, the Equipment file might be worth a look. At the deepest end of the rules rabbit hole is the Patrons, Favour and Debt document, this is core to the game, but all driven by the gamesmaster. By all means, feel free to peruse other sections – though if you’re down to take part in a campaign watch out for spoilers in the Bestiary!
